Game Rules - Rummy

Rummy is a popular card game played with sets of playing cards. This is one of the most popular card games under the category of draw and discard games in India. Indian 13-card rummy game is the most played across the country. The basic objective is to improve your hand by dealing sets of cards and forming a sequence or set according to the rules. It is a skill-based game, and the only luck involved is in the cards you're dealt at the start. Players improve their hands by discarding unhelpful cards and picking favorable ones.

Rules to Remember

Always keep in mind that the main objective in Rummy is to arrange the cards into sequences first. Here are the key rules:

• You must arrange at least two sequences, with one being a pure sequence.
• Remaining cards can be arranged into valid sets or sequences.

Basic Rules of Rummy

• The game is played between 2 to 6 players.
• Two standard 52-card decks are used, including Jokers.
• Each player is dealt 13 cards.
• A sequence is 3 or more running cards of the same suit, e.g., 10♦ J♦ Q♦.
• A set is a group of 3 or more cards of the same face value but different suits, e.g., 4♦ 4♠ 4♣.
• A pure sequence is a sequence without a joker.
• A Joker can replace any missing card in a set or sequence.

Examples of Valid Sequences

• 4♥ - 5♥ - 6♥ (Pure Sequence)
• A♥ - 2♥ - 3♥ - 4♥ (Pure Sequence)
• 7♠ - Joker - 9♠ (Non-Pure Sequence with Joker)

How to Play Rummy with Jokers

Two types of jokers are used in Rummy: Wild Joker and Printed Joker. A Wild Joker is randomly selected at the start of the game. Printed Jokers can also replace any missing card in a set or sequence.

Winning in Rummy

When you've arranged all the cards into proper sequences and sets, including at least one pure sequence, you declare the game by discarding a card to the Finish Slot. Your opponents will also need to show their hands after you've declared.

Example of Valid Declaration

A♥ 2♥ 3♥ 4♥ | 7♣ 8♣ 9♣ | 10♦ 10♠ 10♣ | K♠ K♦ K♣

This is a valid declaration because all 13 cards are arranged in valid sequences or sets.

Example of Invalid Declaration

A♥ 2♥ 3♥ 4♥ | 4♣ 5♣ 6♣ | 7♦ 7♦ 7♥ 7♣

This is an invalid declaration because the set has two cards of the same suit (7♦).

Maximum Points

• The maximum points a player can get is 80, regardless of the number of high-value cards.
• A wrong declaration leads to a penalty of 80 points.
• Players who lose with a valid hand will receive 2 points.
